Desde sua fundação, em 1963, a entidade tem sido dirigida por líderes fortes, que fizeram história, que deixaram a marca do seu trabalho na trajetória do setor e até mesmo, em certa medida, nos destinos do País. Cada um a seu modo, com sua personalidade, temperamento, ideário e estilo próprio de atuação. Manoel da Costa Santos (1963/1980) Eleito presidente, Manoel da Costa Santos, que dirigiu a entidade entre 1963 e 1980, faz no dia de sua posse um discurso contundente, “O paradoxo da situação brasileira”, que quase lhe custa a liberdade. Com o início, em 1964, do ciclo de governos militares, Costa Santos situa imediatamente a Abinee como interlocutora privilegiada das autoridades. No plano interno, faz da Abinee a principal entidade representativa do setor. Duas instituições setoriais atuantes à época decidem logo unir-se a ela (Afrate, Associação dos Fabricantes de Rádio e Televisão, e Abrafete, Associação dos Fabricantes de Aparelhos Telefônicos). No plano nacional, Costa Santos se credencia como interlocutor das autoridades da área econômica, como os ministros Octávio Bulhões, Delfim Netto, Reis Velloso, entre outros. Manoel da Costa Santos (1963/1980) Elected president, Manoel da Costa Santos, who presided over the entity between 1963 and 1980, gave an incisive speech on the day he took office, “The paradox of the Brazilian situation”, which almost cost him his freedom.
